It came out of York in southern Pennsylvania near the Maryland border suggesting it might be of Pennsylvania or Maryland origin considering its construction. The secondary wood used in the drawer sides is pine which was a plentiful wood in the mid Atlantic region and commonly used in furniture construction. The dovetails in the sides of the drawer front and back are hand cut with the scribe marks still visible. The rest of the table appears to be of cherry wood. The style and construction suggest a time of origin of probably between 1820 to 1840. This table is a survivor having lasted over 200 years but did show much evidence of heavy use. It was structurally sound but cosmetically a wreck. It has been given a deep cleaning and a light sanding to remove the worst of the surface damage while leaving as much as possible of its acquired character intact. Surface scratches, minor marks and areas darkened by generations of hands were reduced but traces remain reminding one of the distressed history of the piece. One leg appears to have been of special interest to somebody’s puppy showing evidence of teething marks. These could have been removed during restoration but the decision was made to leave them in place as they remind one of the history of this table. The table was then sealed with garnet shellac and given four coats of teak oil varnish. This gives the piece good resistance to heat and moisture and makes for a beautiful, food safe surface. It is 20” x 39” when closed giving it a relatively modest footprint in tight spaces but opens to an ample 51” when both of the 16” leaves are raised. It would make a beautiful addition to your country kitchen or breakfast nook. Please look carefully at the pictures as they make up an important part of the description. Questions are always welcome.
