With our absolute highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques takes the utmost pleasure in offering this wonderful antique side chair. We are always in pursuit of high quality antique chairs to either accompany a larger piece of furniture such as a dining table or office desk or for the purposes of accenting a collection of antiques. This chair is the perfect design solution for an interior with primitive antiques and could work in nearly any room of the home. We often see collectors use these accent chairs for the corners of rooms, hallways or entryways, or beside a larger piece of furniture such as a chest of drawers. The beauty of this primitive side chair is that it will enhance and bring a sense of cohesion to any space which it occupies.
This chair was constructed in the later half of the 19th century and remains entirely all original. The frame of the chair was varnished, and the surface has developed a craquelure texture and a deep patina complete with rich undertones which provide a depth of color only found on these few surviving examples. An artist applied gold paint lines to accent the darker color of the frame and add a sense of vibrancy to an otherwise understated chair. The frame of the chair consists of three contoured ladderback supports between two upright supports which are shaped in a manner similar to that of an antique thumb-back windsor chair. The seat remains in good condition having been crafted from a primitive splint woven material that has held up well. While the seat and chair frame are both strong, we advise that this chair is used for decorative purposes and not worn down through daily use as to preserve the integrity and condition for future generations. The frame of the chair is bolstered by double stretcher supports on three sides and a rear stretcher as well. The chair measures 17 1/2” wide x 13 3/4” deep x 34” tall with a 17” seat height.
