This is a rare and desirable Oval Vegetable Bowl with Lid from Noritake In its esteemed pattern No. 175. The green mark on this exemplar dates it, rather indefinitely, to the middle of the 20th Century. Pattern No 175 is loved its raised 24K gold enamel design on bone white and yellow banded ground. No. 175 evokes images of luxury from earlier times and early 2oth Century, even Art Nouveau, elegance. More precise dating of this item is impossible. Nevertheless the mark is crisp and clear. It is in exceptional condition however, with clear hand applied gold decoration intact, and as originally rendered. The mouth opening of the bowl is 9.5" at its longest point. The bowl with handles included, is 12" long. Its depth is approximately 4.5"
This pattern picked up the nickname "Christmas Ball" somewhere along the line. Undoubtedly in the West where No 175 has been particularly prized for its presence at large celebrations, and yes, even "Balls".
