This beautifully framed antique engraving is Plate 6 from William Hogarth’s influential 1747 series *Industry and Idleness*, titled *The Industrious 'Prentice Out of His Time and Married to His Master's Daughter*. Part of a 12-print moral narrative, this piece illustrates the rewards of virtue and hard work, as seen in the marriage of the apprentice Goodchild and his rise to business success.
The print is elegantly housed behind glass in a black-painted wooden frame, which also features a glass back—allowing both sides of the piece to be viewed and preserved. A metal hanger on the reverse makes wall display easy, and the number “23” appears handwritten on the back, possibly from a prior collection or cataloguing system.
Rich in historical and visual detail, the scene captures the newly married Goodchild outside his home, paying the drummers the morning after his wedding. The shop sign, “West and Goodchild,” signals his advancement to business partner, while The Monument to the Great Fire of London appears in the background. Text at the bottom includes the moral inscription: *“The Virtuous Woman is a Crown to her Husband”* from Proverbs.
