Each vase is formed on a copper body and decorated with polychrome enamel peonies and butterflies set against a black ground, articulated through fine cloisonné wirework and finished with gilt rims and feet. The peony symbolizes wealth and honor, while the butterfly represents joy and harmony, a pairing long established in Chinese decorative tradition.
