Item description:
glazed and vitrified ceramic plate, entirely hand-modeled on a potter's wheel and decorated entirely by hand, depicting a wonderful portrait on the rim with a scroll bearing the name of the subject, "ettore," which is thought to refer to ettore fieramosca, a famous historical figure from the 1500s who was the protagonist of the challenge of barletta. The rim features geometric decorations and a stylized corolla of foliage that echoes the raphaelesque decorations of ancient renaissance vases. The plate is finished with metallic lustres, typical of gualdo's artistic production. The object dates back to around the mid-20th century and is signed on the back in blue underglaze 'remigi' and with the place of production, 'gualdo t.'. It was created by enzo remigi, an italian artist working in gualdo tadino of considerable artistic importance.
information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
enzo remigi, son of the ceramist discepolo remigi, was born in 1914 and learned the art of ceramics working with his father in the family business "b.a.u." (bottega artigiana umbra) in gualdo tadino. Immediately after world war ii, he went into business with luigi morelli and angelo (second of that name) and fernando pascucci, heirs to the family factory founded by their grandfather angelo (first of that name), in the ceramics factory "i.c.a.p." (industria ceramica angelo pascucci) in gualdo tadino, which specialized in the semi-industrial production of antique and renaissance-style ceramics decorated with metallic lustres. Subsequently, in 1970, he took over the family business "bau" and renewed its production by introducing modern-style works alongside the traditional gualdo line. Enzo remigi died prematurely in 1973.
