It is Embossed with a Number 2 … Read more This Really is an Great Looking Authentic Antique American Primitive Stoneware Storage Jug. It is Embossed with a Number 2 Confirming its Two Gallon Liquid Storage Capacity. It is Also Embossed - Signed by the Well Documented Maker REIDINGER & CAIRE in POUGHKEEPSIE NEW YORK. Records Indicate that this Company was Formed by the Partnership of Philip Riedinger and Adam Caire Producing Stoneware Items From Approx 1857 to 1878. It is Rendered in a Classic American Jug Form with a Slightly Tapered Waist. It has a Salt Glaze Exterior and the Front of the Jug has a Very Large & Elaborate Hand Decorated Exceptionally Nice Deep Cobalt Blue Color Stylized Flower Decoration. Back in the Day These Types of Stoneware Items were a Necessity in Most of Americas Farms and Household's and They were Made - Intended For Everyday Utilitarian Use. These Types of Jugs were Commonly Used to Store Liquids such as Ciders, Vinegar, Ales, Liquors & Spirits, Spring Water Etc. It is in Very Nice Overall Original Condition and it Displays Greatly!. PLEASE NOTE -- That at Some Point in the Past it was Painted Red and that The Vast Majority of the Paint was Also Removed at Some Point in the Past. I thought about Making an Attempt to Remove the Remnants but I Actually Came to the Conclusion that I Like Unique Look that it Adds!. It has 2 Chips at the Top - Spout. It has No Other Issues - No Cracks - No Repairs. It Does Have a Few Very Minor Surface Only Glaze Imperfections All of which Would have Occurred in the Making - Kiln Firing Process. Stoneware Pieces Like This were Fired in Very Large Kilns with Many Other Pieces at the Same Time and These Types of Kiln Flaws are Quite Common. It is in Strong - Sound and Perfectly Usable if so Desired..
