Marvelous vintage Art Deco to Art Nouveau Bimini green & white Austrian art glass set including 1 decanter & topper & 4 coupes with mermaid stems & etched floral designs on the cups. This piece has been attributed based upon archived research including online sources, vintage documentation and catalogs, designer literature, and other materials however, it is not signed or marked in any way. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been refinished or restored. Specifically, the rim of one coupe has a tiny pin-point manufacturers flaw that is not a chip, it’s smooth. The domed part of the stopper was hollow but the bottom broke so we filled the cavity with epoxy & polished the bottom flat & glued cork to the bottom. It works fine & looks great. The set is priced accordingly. Also, we are selling this as a set of 5 total pieces, however, we have an additional 5th coupe that was broken at the stem where it connects to the cup/bowl. It has been reglued, looks good, and can be used so we will be sending it with the set at no charge. Please see photos, zoom in for details, & see long description as they are part of the condition report. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, Early to Mid-20th Century.
Well… What do you think? Are Mermaids real?? Those fascinating half-human, half-fish sirens of the sea… These legendary sea creatures have been enticing our curiosity since ancient times. Real or not, they have definitely been a source of entertainment and subjects in mythical history. What we DO know, is this Bimini Austrian Art Glass set featuring Mermaids IS real… and it is MAGNIFICENT!!!! This is a petite set of 5 pieces including 4 coupe glasses and a decanter with a stopper. The coupes are 3.75 inches tall & composed of gorgeous green Austrian Art Glass bases & bowls bearing beautiful etched floral designs and glamorous white mermaid stems lift the bowls. The decanter is also petite at 2.75” diameter and 9 inches tall to the top of stopper and also composed of lovely green Austrian Art Glass with fabulous floral etchings and it features a matching mermaid stopper AND a mermaid on the inside base of the decanter. Their style borders between Art Deco to Art Nouveau and their smaller stature is the perfect size for cordials, sherry, or even a shot of your favorite spirit. Bimini Glass was founded in Austria in 1923 by artist, poet, and dreamer Fritz Lampl. He rented a basement, employed an out-of-work glassblower, and invited his brother-in-law Joseph Berger to help create and convert designs into glass. Designs were created hands-on by Fritz Lampl & Joseph Berger. They produced lampwork glass sculptures including figures & animals, vases, glasses, decanters, and more. Bimini glass figurines have been called so beautiful they are like frozen moments in glass, or as Lampl describes them as “frozen poetry.” Fritz Lampl chose the name for his company from a poem by Heinrich Heine… Here is an extract: “On the Isle of Bimini, Reigns eternal ecstasy, And the golden larks are singing, In the Blue their tirili.” - Heinrich Heine. The company was very successful for many years until it was overtaken by world events. Due to the rise of Nazism, Fritz Lampl was forced to leave Austria so he relocated to Vienna until 1938. Joseph Berger emigrated to England. Between 1938 & 1940 they relaunched a new company under the name Orplid Glass, which was equally as successful as Bimini with articles about the firm appearing in Vogue, the Courier, & Design Magazine. As the 50’s progressed the market became inundated and Orplid financially declined. Fritz Lampl passed away in 1955 and both Bimini & Orplid Glass resolved; however, their beautiful glassworks are highly sought after today. – Info acquired from The Glass Museum & Glass Encyclopedia.
