An original watercolor painting on artist's board by James Garden Laing, Scottish artist 1852-1915, "An atmospheric view of Durham Cathedral, England" scene of green areas, houses and buildings with multicolored roofs, chimney smoke rising from the homes creating an ethereal effect, the cathedral rising majestically from the mist, 18" x 23", signed James G. Garden in the lower right corner front, a label from the frame reverse - "No. 2 Durham, by James G. Laing, Albany Mansions, Charing Cross, Glasgow". CA number 3971, CA purchased winter 2025 from a south of England auction house.
The painting has been lightly surface cleaned, Museum Glass and backing. The frame is original of oak, in two parts, and gilded.
Laing was a landscape and architectural painter mostly in watercolors. He was born in Aberdeen and married to Annie Rose Low, also an artist. He primarily lived in Glasgow. In 1885 he became a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Water Colours.
He exhibited at the Dowdeswell Gallery; the Fine Art Society; the Grosvenor Gallery; the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts; the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool; the Manchester City Art Gallery; the Royal Academy; the Royal Society of British Artists; the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours; the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Water Colours.
