Derived from canopies for processions, the term has come to signify all such coverings, most famously the Bernini high alter baldachin of St. Peter's, Rome. Handcarved of walnut & chestnut, this canopy is supported by fluted columns, all crowned with Gothic Revival spires & a gold leafed Celtic cross (possibly Brittany with this touch & the native woods). 54" h., 22" x 22".
