Beautiful engraving after Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier's (French, 1815-1891) original oil painting of Napoleon on his horse, Marengo. Signed in pencil in the margin illegibly, probably by the engraver of the plate. Image size 8.5" x 6"; overall with mat and frame 14.75" x 11.5".
Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier was a French academic painter and sculptor. He became famous for his depictions of Napoleon and his military sieges and maneuvers in paintings acclaimed both for the artist's mastery of fine detail and his assiduous craftsmanship.
