This Really is a Great Looking Example of a Authentic Antique Massachusetts - American Primitive Stoneware Storage Jar - Crock. Circa Approx 1850s It is Embossed with a Number 2 Confirming its Two Gallon Storage. Capacity. It is Also Embossed - Signed by the Well Documented Maker "L & B G CHASE - SOMERSET" ( Note that the "G" Should Actually be a "C" For Clark ). In Approx 1840 Clark Chace Jr. with his Brothers Benjamin and Leonard Built a Plant in Somerset Massachusetts Making it Also Referred to as "Pottersville". It is has a Salt Glazed Exterior and it is Rendered in Classic American Stoneware Form - Shape with the Added Feature of Oversize Applied Handles - "Ears". The Front of the Jar has a Very Nicely Rendered Hand Decorated Navy Blue Stylized Flower Decoration. The Interior is Done in a Dark Coffee Brown Color. Back in the Day These Types of Stoneware Items were a Necessity in Most of Americas Farms and Household's and They were Made - Intended For Everyday Utilitarian Use. These Types of American Stoneware Items we Completely Hand Made out of Indigenous Clay on a Potters Wheel from Start to Finish and Therefore No 2 are Absolutely Identical. This Jar Style was Commonly Used to Store and Preserve Many Types of Liquids and Foods. It is in Very Nice All Original Condition and it Displays Beautifully. It is Strong and Sound with No Cracks and No Repairs. It has 8 Very Small Top Rim Outer Perimeter Chips Acquired with Normal Use. Superficial Factory Flaws Include a "Iron Ping" Under the Glaze Surface Chip Below the Right Side Handle as Well as a Dramatic Assortment of Surface Glaze Imperfection on the Coffee Brown Interior Bottom & Side Walls All Which are Kiln Flaws and Would Have Occurred in the Making - Firing Process. There is Also a Few Amber Color Surface Glaze Drips at the Top Left Front Rim area ( Drips from Another Piece Being Fired Above ). Stoneware Pieces Like This were Stacked and Fired in Very Large Kilns with Many Other Pieces at the Same Time. These and Many Other Types of Kiln Flaws are Quite Common.
