This adorable type of sewing basket was all the rage in the mid 20th-century. The concept shape of this sewing basket, with natural bamboo handle, was introduced in the 1967 JC Penny Christmas Catalog. The sturdy wooden frame’s exterior is rattan rope handwoven in a basket weave pattern with cane splints interspersed in a diagonal pattern. The stylish color combination of cerulean blue and ivory with a dash of navy blue really make this beauty pop! The lid’s rim is finished with the same rattan rope all-around and is secured by a brass fold over peg latch. When the lid is opened, you’ll note an all-around gimp trim on the rim of the lower part of the basket and rim on the underside of the lid which gives it a nice finished look. The natural bamboo swivel handle adds a boho chic vibe to the overall look-and-feel of the basket. The underside is wood which was covered in paper; country of origin (Japan) and Lot#-741 is stamped on the lower right corner. The interior compartment is lined in a sky blue rayon satin that has some wear from age i.e. slight tears / stretches (see photos 7 & 8) which does not affect its overall beauty or utility. The interior underside of the lid has pearl-accented tufted cushioning for pins and needles with a center satin band with flat loops to hold scissors, etc. with a few small pin dot impressions from holding pins over the year and an indiscernible stretch of the fabric on the right side (see photo 11). Two hinges on the back allow the lid to be fully opened with slender ropes on each side of the lid allowing it to remain open without stress. The makers label is located at the top on the underside of the lid. It measures 12½” x 9” x 7¾” W/D/H (height is with the handle down); add 4” when the handle is extended up; interior compartment 6” x 10¼” x 7¼“ H/W/D; weight 2 lbs. 4 oz. In excellent condition with age-appropriate wear that has been described above. While designed to store sewing accoutrements, it’s perfectly suited for storing craft or embroidery items. A fabulous basket for a collector of vintage sewing baskets or the perfect gift for someone who is.
