Absolutely stunning Taisho era Japanese sewing box. Beautifully textured Japanese wood consisting of Tamo Ash (called Toneriko), Chestnut (Kurinoki), and Paulownia (Kirinoki) woods.
Hinged lid opens at top to one elongated box with 2 compartments. The small square compartment at the right can be removed from the elongated box. This elongated box can be removed to reveal a second secret pull out box, love this! This drawer is where the seamstress may have kept her earnings or the wife would have hidden the family money away from her prodigal husband.
Has 5 more pull out drawers. Very useful for trinkets, sewing bits, jewelry, or whatever tiny treasures you own. There is a vertical slot to the upper right rear that was used to store a measuring ruler (not included) called Shaku. This measurement was banned with penalties after WW2 in place of the metric system; however, since it is the traditional measurement of choice in making kimonos, it can still be found available today. After 1961, the use of the Shaku was a criminal act but that didn't stop people from using it.
Measures approximately 12 3/4" x 7 1/4" x 10" tall
Fantastic condition, no signs of damage or use. Incredibly beautiful and most excellent condition for it's old age, dating around 1915.
