Piero Fornasetti had a muse in opera singer Lina Cavalieri. He created a series of plates with her face and variations of her face. This is No. 254 in his series. There were over 400 variations created starting in 1952. We estimate this one is from the 1960s. He has distorted her nose and lips depicting both much larger than real life. This series was created in black and white on a Porcelain plate utilizing dot/grid patterns. The hand-decorated image is both striking and entertaining. These plates are almost always a decorative wall display, but we have seen them used as dinnerware.
