Engraving, 1974 Handsigned by the artist in pencil and numbered 81/99 Publisher : Editions l'Ermitage (Paris) Catalog : [Masrour 187] 63.00 cm. x 45.00 cm. 24.8 in. x 17.72 in. (paper) 24.00 cm. x 21.70 cm. 9.45 in. x 8.54 in. (image) Gouge engraving A sphere pulsates, suspended between light and shadow. Its surface is strewn with rust chips, as many projected fragments as the stigmata of slow erosion. All around, the dark matter seems to disperse and dilute, as if the etching were capturing an instant of transformation. Through this subtle interplay of textures, volumes and contrasts, Piza succeeds in animating a flat surface, giving his work an almost sculptural dimension. We find here the very essence of his plastic language: a dynamic abstraction, where every incision and every relief participate in a silent choreography of forces in tension. Arthur Luiz Piza once again explores the tension between matter and space, fullness and emptiness. True to his approach to gouge engraving, the artist sculpts the surface with a meticulousness that creates a dialogue between light and shadow.
