This rare and artful wall-mounted secretary desk is a striking example of early 20th-century Japonisme—the Western decorative movement inspired by Japanese aesthetics. Dating from the 1930s–1940s, this compact folding desk is crafted in solid wood with a black lacquer finish, featuring a beautifully hand-painted antique gold and red Japanese landscape scene. The front panel depicts stylized figures, a geisha holding an umbrella, and distant Pagoda temple architecture—all rendered with the delicate precision and compositional elegance drawn from Japanese woodblock art.
The fold-down front opens to reveal a writing surface and a series of slim internal compartments for mail, stationery, or small essentials. A built-in inkwell hole hints at its original use as a writing desk (inkwell and key not included), while the streamlined side panels with Greek key detailing and stepped edges add a sculptural Art Deco flair.
Designed to mount directly to the wall, this space-saving secretary functions beautifully as a writing desk, entryway drop station, or decorative cabinet. The top shelf surface is wide enough to display a small lamp or sculpture.
This piece reflects the decorative traditions explored by influential designers of the era such as Jean Dunand and Maison Jansen, both of whom blended lacquer artistry and Japonisme motifs with modern European forms during the 1930s and 1940s.
