This is an early 20th-century antique wicker wing chair with magazine pocket. In 1893 Joseph P. McHugh and Co began selling these wicker wing chairs which they called the Belknap chair, to capitalize on the growing popularity of 18th century furniture designs that were replacing the ornate Victorian style. This particular wing chair design was based on the traditional wing chair with the added detail of a side pocket to hold magazines. It quickly became the most popular design in the company’s line and continued to be made, and widely copied, until around 1930. This chair is painted white with an high-back silhouette, flared wings and wide arms. One arm has a wide deep pocket for storing reading materials. The intricate lattice weave is beautifully executed showcasing the artistry and durability of traditional wickerwork.
What sets this chair apart is the ornate braided wicker banding and the original spring seat foundation—an increasingly rare find—offering a firm yet resilient base for a deep cushion. The springs have been recently re-tied and a new cloth base has been installed to anchor the new blue striped zippered show cushion. This hard to find antique chair would complement both cottage-style and coastal interiors as well as more eclectic vintage decors.
