The Murano story starts in Italy - famous for its amazing waterways, architecture and art. The early early history of Murano glassmaking success dates to the days of Attila the Hun who ruled from 434-453 when Altino on the Adriatic coast of southern Italy was invaded, and citizens migrated first to the small marshy Venetian Island of Torcello, then to Murano, where glass making began in the 16th century against all odds.
According to Italy Magazine, "The fact that the Venetian lagoon is a series of small islands with absolutely none of the natural resources required to make glass — like sand, soda, and ash from trees (along with trees needed to burn in the furnaces) — makes this a very unlikely success story. Every ingredient needed to be hauled and sourced from the mainland. This remains the case today."
"The isolation and concentration of the glass furnaces in Murano is part of what created the perfect setting to evolve glassmaking from practical production to the artform of today. The discovery of how to make clear glass by Angelo Barovier in the 16th century was a turning point, as Murano became the only exporter of mirrors in Europe. The glass formulas — secrets of how to produce the colors — were passed down generation to generation in handwritten notebooks. Glass can often be dated by the colors used, as new minerals became known throughout the centuries."
According to Life in Italy, Authentic Murano glass is made only on the island of Murano and the use of different materials is what creates its unique appearance and artistry. So, make sure your Murano investment retains its value and stands the test of time. Choose Authentic Murano vs items labeled Murano Style. Items labeled Murano Style are NOT Authentic Murano. And beware if you see the words “Vetro realizzato secondo la tecnica dei maestri muranesi.” The meaning is “glass made according to the technique of Murano masters,” therefore the glass is not true Murano.
This is a true statement piece and one to be cherished for generations!
