The gently contoured top and shaped façade follow the en arbalète form, named for its resemblance to the curve of a crossbow.
Three full-width drawers are framed by deeply molded panels and embellished with floral rosettes, stylized foliage, and shell-inspired carving. The original brass bale pulls and pierced rosettes remain in place, adding authenticity and a pleasing rhythm across the front.
The shaped apron continues the carved decoration below, while scrolled legs terminate in traditional escargot feet. Recessed side panels and the broad oak top complete the construction, and the naturally aged patina reveals the depth and character of the old-growth wood.
Country French cabinetmakers often adapted the flowing lines of Louis XV design into sturdy regional furniture made from native oak. This commode reflects that tradition beautifully, preserving both the practical craftsmanship and decorative spirit of 19th century provincial France.
