The genre that gives me the most amusement is the humor that the potters imbue in their subjects, like this open mouth crayfish wall pocket. I cannot keep smiling every time I see it. A crayfish is related to the lobster but very diminutive in size. The potter who made this truly understood its nature, giving it a fat belly, s few legs and a short tail. The big open mouth and protruding eyes are the dominating features. The blue and green glaze is typical of Shiwan potteries. Tiny bubbles and tiny spiderweb crazings apprear under the glaze. This glaze was used in the small ginger jars that were imported to this country since the turn of the 20th century. The unglazed areas show the sandy composition of the Shiwan clay, which also offers as support for dating. This clay predates the light color clay of present day Shiwan wares. It places this piece in the 1950's era. See less
