This tapestry depicts a provincial landscape of the Middle Ages, and was originally woven at the Tournai ateliers in the Flanders region of Europe, around 1515. The scene represents a falconing expedition in undulating countryside, and gives a portrayal of the way of life of the noble folks at the beginning of the reign of Francis I. The falconing party are preparing for their expedition, while a richly-dressed lord and his lady are setting out from the castle on the right to join the outing. The delightful disproportion of the naive subject matter represents the unmistakable style of tapestries during the transitional period between the mille-fleurs (thousand flowers) tapestries of the fifteenth century and the landscapes of the Renaissance. This beautiful tapestry is Silkscreened (also known as serigraphed) onto an irregularly woven fabric made from wool, cotton or linen. Considerable labour is required with this process including hand-painting to finish the details. Silk screen tapestries appear antiqued and aged giving them the look and feel of tapestries that hang in museums today. Elevate your space with the artistry and history of this hand printed manufacturing copy of the masterpiece.
