His compositions capture the Japanese countryside and quiet coastal villages with a feeling of calm that inspired manga and anime artists such as Studio Ghibli's Hayao Miyazaki. Hasui's scenes of rain and snow are especially popular, as well as night scenes that highlight his mastery of light and shadow. In 1956, "Zojo Temple in Snow" was designated an Intangible Cultural Treasure, establishing Hasui as one of Japan's most accomplished Post-war landscape artists. His works are held in nearly all important art collections such at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and The British Museum.

Hasui evokes a warm rainy day in this design from 1933. A man on a docked boat sits next to a bouquet of pink flowers, looking out to a woman walking through the rain. Although this print was originally designed in 1933, this impression is from a post-war edition by Doi Hangaten published while Hasui was still alive. Another impression of this design is held in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston.
