Signed by the known listed British angling artist A Roland Knight.
Artight biography Arthur Roland Knight was a British painter who was born in 1845 in Aston, Birmingham to Edward, a chemist and Ann Knight. By 1871, he had become a professional artist and then moved to Tottenham, London. He specialised in mainly angling paintings and is renowned for his paintings of Trout & Pike fish. He flourished as an artist between the years 1879 and 1921. Knight married Harriet Amy Golding on 8 April, 1882 at St Bartholomew's Church, Moor Lane in the City of London. They lived at 9 Helena Road in Walthamstow which their two children, Katherine and Arthur Roland Jnr. He spent the rest of his life at Helena Road where he died in 1914 aged 68. He was buried at Queens Road Cemetery, Walthamstow.
During the early 19th century angling as a sport had increased in popularity amongst the leisure class, with many travelling to areas such as the Highlands to fish. Knight was one of a group of artists who were able to capitalise on the growth in demand for paintings of angling and fish subjects, often travelling around to paint commissions. Due to the knowledge of his subject and attention to detail, it is highly likely he was a keen angler himself. His paintings remain highly collectible and examples of his works are held by Chertsey Museum and Vestry House Museum. Roland Knight's work has been exhibited at galleries & auction houses around the world.
The northern pike (Esox lucius) is a species of carnivorous fish of the genus Esox (pikes). They are commonly found in moderately salty and fresh water of the Northern Hemisphere. They are known simply as a pike in Great Britain, Ireland & most of Eastern Europe, Canada and the USA, although in the Midwest, they may be called a Northern. Pike can grow to a relatively large size. Their average length is about 40–55 cm (16–22 in), with maximum recorded lengths of up to 150 cm (59 in) and maximum weights of 28.4 kg (63 lb). The IGFA currently recognises a 25 kg (55 lb) pike caught by Lothar Louis on Greffern Lake, Germany, on 16 October 1986, as the all-tackle world-record holding northern pike. Northern pike grow to larger sizes in Eurasia than in North America, and in coastal Eurasian regions than inland ones.
