Based on the cartographic work of renowned 16th-century geographer Abraham Ortelius (1527–1598), the map was published by Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571–1638), one of the most celebrated Dutch cartographers of the 17th century.

The finely engraved map illustrates the ancient territorial divisions of Gaul, including Aquitania, Lugdunensis, and Belgica, with numerous Roman settlements, rivers, mountain ranges, and regional boundaries carefully identified in Latin. Delicate hand-colored outlines distinguish the provinces, while an elaborate ornamental cartouche in the lower left corner displays the map's title and acknowledges Ortelius's original geographical research.

The historic cartographic work is beautifully presented under protective glass, surrounded by a wide dark mat and an ornate giltwood frame decorated with a continuous carved foliate border.

The antique map is in good condition commensurate with age and use, showing minor paper tears and an original central fold from its former placement in an atlas (see detailed images). An interesting historical document and decorative artwork, it would make a sophisticated addition to a library, study, or gentleman's office.
