Delve into the serene beauty of British artist Alex Packham's artist's proof, featuring a breathtaking mill near the water. This original piece, crafted on paper, dates back to the early 1940s to late 1950s, offering a glimpse into the idyllic landscapes of the past. The print measures 26.25" x 20.5" with a border, and the image alone measures 18.375" x 12.25", encapsulating the essence of Packham's artistic vision. Art enthusiasts and collectors will appreciate the rarity and historical value of this artwork. It stands as a testament to the era's artistic expression and serves as an elegant addition to any collection or interior space.
The exquisite detail and theme of this artist's proof reflect the unique style and talent of Alex Packham. Those acquainted with his work know that much of his later work was marine themed- beautiful ships, water scapes, etc,
Here in his earlier work we can still see his mastery over the water, but more importantly, his keen way of capturing the charms of a 19th century mill, for example the mill wheel itself, his contrasts of light and shadows on the stone foundation and wood siding, the smaller split levels that break up the main 2 story building and the greatly extended gable that would have been used to connect a chute to in order to channel milled corn or grain off the top level, through a chute and into a cart or sealable vessel below.
An artist's proof is not a lithograph. It is a prototype of sorts used by the artist to check the quality of the print before finalizing an edition or they may be used as gifts or kept for personal use or sold separately from the main edition. These are typically more valuable and desirable by collectors because of their limited availability.
The Roman numerals that Alex Packham used in the numerator position -XVIII translates to the number 18.
The Roman numerals he used in the denominator position- XXXV translates to the number 35
So this Limited edition Artist's proof was number 18 out of 35 total that he allowed to be produced.
This will be shipped in a strong walled tube with prefitted ends. Very securely and not rolled too tightly- 4 " in diameter
