Small-scale study of Poussin's famous work by an unknown artist (early 20th Century). A man sits at the left of the composition - in the original, he is washing his feet at a fountain, but there is no fountain in this copy. To the right, other people are resting at the base of a building with large columns. Lush trees fill up the surrounding landscape, with a few buildings and mountains in the far distance. It is likely that the creator made the sketch or preliminary painting while visiting the National Gallery to view the original, and completed the work at a later time.
