Crafted in Quimper, Brittany, France, circa 1880, this colorful antique faience bowl was created by the renowned Porquier-Beau pottery and features a charming hand-painted Breton scene titled "Paiement du Loyer" (The Rent Payment). The decorative ceramic piece showcases the exceptional craftsmanship and traditional regional imagery for which Quimper pottery is celebrated.
The oval-shaped bowl features a gracefully scalloped rim decorated with intricate cobalt-blue foliate scrollwork against a white background, highlighted by delicate ochre accents. At the center, three figures dressed in traditional Breton costumes are gathered around a small table. An older gentleman gestures animatedly while a younger man examines coins spread across the tabletop, accompanied by a woman in a traditional Breton headdress. The lively scene illustrates the payment of rent, capturing an everyday moment of rural life in 19th-century Brittany.
Above the figures, a colorful heraldic crest featuring the ermine symbols of Brittany is flanked by decorative figures, adding historical and regional significance to the composition. The rich palette of cobalt blue, yellow, green, rose, and soft earth tones enhances the finely detailed painting.
The antique bowl is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use. The underside bears the crossed PB monogram of Porquier-Beau, and a hanging device on the back allows for easy wall display.
Porquier-Beau was a celebrated Quimper pottery partnership established in the late 19th century, particularly admired for its finely painted Breton costumes, traditional customs, and historical scenes. Its distinctive faience remains highly sought after by collectors of French regional ceramics.
