Each jug is graduated in size and retains its original lead seal.These jugs are characterized by their distinctive tapered body and a large handle, earning them the name "haystack" for their shape. They were typically made of copper. They served as a standard measure for liquids, ensuring fair portions of beverages were served in pubs and inns.

Haystack measures ranged in size from 1/2 pint to 5 gallons, and the capacity was always stamped on the pitcher. Measurements of these jugs include 1/8 GILL, 1/4 GILL, 1/2 GILL and 1 GILL. One GILL measurement is a liguid measure containing one fourth of a standard pint. Thus, at one-fourth of a pint, a gill equates to four ounces.
