Four fine original 17th century hand-colored dressage engravings in matching black and gilt wood frames, from an illustrated treatise authored by dressage master Pluvinel (1552-1620), who was an important and esteemed courtier to several French monarchs, and riding instructor to the young King Louis XIII, “L’instruction du roy en l'exercice de monter à cheval.” Several of these plates depict the young king, “Le Roy,” and portraits other individuals of the court including Pluvinel himself. The setting one image is in the courtyard of the Place des Vosges, then called the Place Royale. The book was published posthumously with engravings by Dutch artist Crispijn de Passe the Younger 1597 - 1670). Interesting double plate impression, both plate marks are visible. Very good antique condition, with some toning, to the paper. Very light wear to the attractive and high quality 20th century frames.
