'Le Reliquaire' was a popular subject for the artist and Goodall also submitted a version of 'Le Reliquaire' for exhibition with the Society of Painters in Water Colours. That particular example was reproduced widely through engravings. In 1863, the work was illustrated in The Illustrated London News which was, at that time, the highest circulation periodical in England.
Son of the engraver, Edward Goodall, and brother to artists Frederick and Edward Angelo, Walter Goodall studied at the school of design at Somerset House and at the Royal Academy Schools. In 1853, he became an associate of the Old Royal Society of Watercolorists and, in 1862, was elected to full membership. Goodall exhibited with success in London including at the Royal Academy (1852), with the Old Watercolor Society (156 pieces), and internationally including the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition (1876) and the Royal Manchester Institution among other principal watercolor exhibitions.
