41”W x 81”H Excellent condition, Screen print in colors on extra heavy wove paper printed in a limited, unnumbered edition by Petersburg Press, England. Unframed.
This rarely available, joyous and vibrant X-Large screen print poster from 1981 is one of David Hockney’s most celebrated ones. Created for the Metropolitan Opera in New York in conjunction with Hockney’s commission to design the stage sets and costumes for a triple bill of 20th-century French works, featuring Parade, a ballet with music by Erik Satie, followed by two short operas. Parade first debuted in 1917, and was a collaboration between Jean Cocteau and Erik Satie with stage and costume designs by Picasso for Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes in Paris. Hockney’s designs intentionally echo this historic production, incorporating references to Parisian circus characters and Picasso’s Cubist style in the stage sets, costumes and the poster itself. This large scale poster was prominently displayed on billboards around the opera house during the production. A high quality screen print with brilliant colors printed by the renowned Petersburg Press in England, it remains today a coveted collectible and a very impressive addition to any room.
