This is circa 1860's Boulle-revival piece inspired by the late17th/early 18th century marquetry designs of André-Charles Boulle. It is particularly interesting because of the use of pewter as the principal metal and the fact that the metal forms the major ground on which the shell is inlaid; this technique is known as “contre partie”. The more conventional “premier partie” uses shell as the main ground.
The cartouche-shaped top inlaid contre partie with a symmetrical display of scrolling foliate bands enclosing a giant patera within a gadrooned border above a conforming serpentine frieze with a drawer on square-cut cabriole legs with espagnolette-cast chutes and scroll-cast sabot.
Height 30 inch; Width 55 inch; Depth 33 inch
Includes a protective glass top.
