This stunning vintage Chinese hand-crafted porcelain ovoid jar or vase is adorned with intricate high-relief polychrome-glazed pomegranate, butterfly and peony motifs set against a deep black background. The detailed craftsmanship extends to the lid, which is sculpted into a realistic pomegranate form, enhancing its artistic appeal. Made in Jingdezhen, China's esteemed "Ceramic Capital," this mid-20th-century export piece exhibits a beautifully aged porcelain clay visible on the unglazed inner lid, while the slightly concave glazed base features a decorative but spurious Qianlong mark. With its vibrant and rich glaze colors, the vase remains in excellent condition, free from repairs or damages, showing only minor age-related wear. A remarkable and collectible piece, it embodies traditional Chinese artistry and elegance.

* In ancient Chinese decorative arts, pomegranates symbolize fertility, abundance, and prosperity, as their many seeds represent the blessing of numerous descendants. Often depicted in wedding decorations and gifts, the fruit conveys wishes for a thriving family and future generations. Similarly, butterflies are associated with love, joy, and longevity, frequently linked to the famous tale of the Butterfly Lovers, symbolizing eternal romance. Since the word for butterfly (dié) sounds like the word for old age (耋), they also represent a long and prosperous life.
When pomegranates, butterflies and peony appear together in art, they create a powerful visual blessing for harmony, love, and a flourishing family lineage. This combination is commonly found in porcelain, embroidery, and lacquerware, reinforcing themes of marital happiness, longevity, and prosperity in Chinese culture.
