With our absolute highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques takes the utmost pleasure in offering this wonderful Queen Anne style armchair. This chair is considerably close in age to being an antique chair as it was produced as early as the 1920's or possibly as late as the 1940's. We believe that this chair was commissioned by Wallace Nutting for a home in New England based upon similar chairs that we have owned in the past. It is common for these chairs to be without identifying marks however we can recognize them as they are superior to most factory-made chairs marketed during this era. Since they are far scarcer than ordinary chairs made at this time they stand apart as being special and by reasonable deduction we can conclude they are associated with Wallace Nutting.
This chair is designed in the tradition of mid 18th century Queen Anne period chairs and made to the same exacting standards as the antique chairs made centuries ago. The entire frame is sturdy and strong with robust joints and plenty of support found from the numerous stretchers that bolster the strength of the chair. The ladderback format consists of four curved rails that each conform to the back of whomever sits in the chair. Two ram's head formed arms are also curved and contoured making for a pretty comfortable sitting experience especially when compared to most other Queen Anne style chairs. The top rail is shaped with an arched center and rests between two upright posts that are topped by knob turned finials. These upright posts are bead and sausage turned and this design is carried forward on the front two vertical supports as well. This chair boasts six spool turned side supports to either side and two baluster turned stretchers spanning the front. The seat is quite strong being fashioned from rush woven material that is handtied and in excellent condition. We do note a few strands of the rush have split however this does not impact the chair or sitting upon the seat really in any regard. The chair measures 23 1/4" wide x 24" deep x 45 1/2" tall with an 18" seat height.
