A majestic and early vessel
An extra large salt glazed canteen or flask used by pilgrims following the route towards Santiago de Compostela
Applied hoops, four on each side, for carrying with leather straps or possibly burlap or jute rope
Beautiful beige/ochre color with prevalent orange to brownish hues
Crafted entirely by hand using pottery wheel and fired in the Medieval ceramic center of Raeren, during its "Golden Age" of "True Stoneware" production
At the time the town was part of the westernmost German hinterland; nowadays (after WWI) is a mostly German-speaking enclave in Belgium
Very early (before the 30-Years war)
Exceedingly RARE find, very well preserved in its authentic condition
Measurements: Approx. 18" tall x 15.5" wide handle to handle x 10.5" deep; the neck is 3.25" long
Weighs about 15 lbs. 12 oz.
Condition: Very Good overall. Please see photos. Besides some manufacturing imperfections to the glaze, no significant issues at all. All original.
