His trompe l’oeil, Surrealism-inspired oil paintings depict hastily wrapped packages, homing in on their creased and wrinkled surfaces and unassuming material. While many of his works suggest stretched canvases awaiting transport, Edelmann first became famous for the painting of a wrapped bottle that he created for a 1993 Absolut Vodka advertising campaign. A graduate of Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, Edelmann worked as an illustrator before turning to painting; he developed his signature style in the 1970s after training under James Rosenquist. His works feature meticulously rendered shadows and textures, and he uses a lustrous palette to imbue his simple subjects with different moods. These wry and mysterious works are in collections that include the Brooklyn Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and Malmo Museum.
