Caldas da Rainha, just north of Lisbon, is considered the center of pottery in Portugal because of its abundance of clay deposits and wonderful ceramics. True collectors know the Silver Coast town of Caldas is one of the best places in the world to find high-quality ceramics. Its renowned pottery is a testament to the rich cultural heritage and skill of its artisans. Production of ceramics in Caldas began in the early-nineteenth century when the region's clay-rich soils were used to make green-copper or brown kitchenware. By the mid-nineteenth century, decorative pieces with naturalist motifs and shiny glazes like this rooster, became part of the cultural identity of the city.
