This unique and original pair of French green ceramic bookends features exquisite craftsmanship. Each piece of raw ceramic was first shaped into its final soft and elegant form, depicting a Miniature Schnauzer dog. It was then fired at approximately 1000°C. An ancient technique was used to apply "cristallina" (a transparent glassy coating) with a brush made of ox hair. The green glaze was subsequently applied over the entire object, also using a brush. The glazing process requires significant skill, as it is essential for the glaze to be evenly distributed across the surface. After this stage, the piece was fired again at a temperature between 920°C and 940°C to set the glaze. Observing the underside of the sculpture offers further insight into this refined technique. This pair of bookends was crafted between 1930 and 1933 in one of the many artisanal workshops in the Lunéville area of France, reflecting the style of the renowned Saint-Clément ceramics factory. Saint-Clément was founded in 1758 by Jacques Chambrette of Lunéville, and the ceramic tradition in the Lunévillois region dates back to the 18th century. The items still produced in Saint-Clément and its surroundings are a testament to this long and prestigious heritage. In 1892, the Lunéville and Saint-Clément factories merged, dominating the French ceramic market.
Regarding the Miniature Schnauzer, this breed originates from Germany and was developed through the selective miniaturization of the Standard Schnauzer. The breed was established between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Initially bred as a hunting and companion dog, the Schnauzer evolved over time to become a guard and defense dog, often accompanying coachmen on their journeys. The Miniature Schnauzer quickly gained worldwide popularity. The bookends are in good condition.
