The heating element is ornamental, as such some pieces were of the day. The egg coddler server piece has a removable 4-egg holder, that fits in the interior suspended domed server, to maintain the temperature of soft boiled or coddled eggs, at a dining table. Back in the Victorian and Edwardian periods as well as the early Art Nouveaux and Art Dec periods, serving pieces such as this were utilized and the norm, as one can envision, say perhaps NYC life in the early days, as breakfast was set for a well to do family, Husband and businessman came down to breakfast, whereupon the wife and Mother sat down to breakfast, with perhaps some staff on the premises, tending to their daily routine, such as meals being served, etc. At some point this server progressed to a more daily unobtrusive piece as single egg holders/coddlers either cream and/or porcelain, much like my Grandmother did daily. There is some patina left to the silver, the interior is in excellent condition given the ra, use and manufactured period, normal and conducive to used, antique pieces. The 3-legged, hand-forged, pieces such delectable details such as the carved feet, the fluted body and fluted legs extending towards the body and ending in the claw foot ends. Maker's markings on the underside of the piece. From a Palm Beach Island, Florida Estate. See less
