Eva Zeisel (1906-2011), who is often called the premier ceramic artist of the 20th Century, worked at the Schamburg Majolika Factory in the late 1920's. While there, she created signature forms that reflected the influence of the Bauhaus movement, with its emphasis on simple and functional forms, and Art deco, with its sinuous, organic designs. Zeisel added bold, saturated colors, often in angular, almost architectural, patterns. Her work was highly original and today is highly collectable.
This vase has Zeisel's characteristic simplicity - an elegant form, tapering perfectly from top to bottom. The colors are a wonderful mix, with the background green painted in such a way that the surface looks almost like a woven textile. The dark brown, especially at the bottom, gives it solidity. The orange and yellow make it pop out and sparkle.
The identifying mark on the base is the typical Schramburg mark of the 1920's and 1930's. It features the SMF shield, above which it says Handpainted, and below which are printed Schramburg and Germany. The number 79 is printed above the mark.
The vase would complement other Eva Zeisel or Modernist pottery. It is an eye-catcher.
