Eva Zeisel (1906-2011), who is often called the premier ceramic artist of the 20th Century, worked at the Schamburg Majolika … Read more Eva Zeisel (1906-2011), who is often called the premier ceramic artist of the 20th Century, worked at the Schamburg Majolika Factory in the late 1920's. While there, she created signature forms that reflected the influence of the Bauhaus movement, with its emphasis on simple and functional forms, and Art deco, with its sinuous, organic designs. Zeisel added bold, saturated colors, often in angular, almost architectural, patterns. Her work was highly original, known internationally, and is highly collectable.

The mark on the base is the formal Schramburg mark of the 1930's and 30's: It says: Handpainted above the Schramburg shield; SMF is printed within the shield; below the shield it says Schramburg Germany. A number, which looks like 65 is printed to the right of the shield.

The pattern on this vase, which seems to be a variation on her "Mondrian" patterns, is unusual, as is the large size, and almost double form. It has been a feature of our collection of German Modernist items for two decades. See less
