Elegant and large original embroidered art (1880-1900) inspired by Musee de Cluny's grand masterpiece set of tapestries The Lady and the Unicorn, created in the 15th century. A lovely French masterpiece featuring the unicorn and lion - a meditation on earthly pleasures and courtly culture, offered through an allegory of the senses. Gold framed behind glass.
Dimensions: 44" wide x 2.5" deep x 22" high (inches)
The original tapestries are at the Musee de Cluny and were originally exhibited in the spring of 1883 and were a tremendous source of inspiration for artists. The artist who made this reproduction changed the proportions of the composition, cutting the inferior part and widening the composition with additional trees on both sides. He also suppressed some of the animals on the background, rabbits or birds, such as the heron above the Lady in the original artwork.
This piece is exceptionally rare for this period and was created entirely by hand through the use of embroidery and eighteenth century yarn.
