This is an authentic cast iron casing with its original hand-crank gear mechanism and wooden handle intact. The front face is boldly embossed with its model name & patent number. With its unique, rounded pot-like silhouette and mechanical top hardware, this piece has an incredible machine-age sculptural presence. Antique Cast Iron Centrifuge Tester from Dairy Farm. Invented by Stephen Babcock in 1890 as a simple but accurate way to detect adulterations practiced by some dairy farmers, including diluting the milk with water or skimming some cream . This would also help the farmers with determing the cost of milk they were selling.

Once a month dairy farmers would test the milk from the cows. They would place fresh milk in special glass test tube flasks ( included) and spin it for 5 minutes with the hand crank of this machine. This would determine the fat content.
