moreThis is an antique class photo from Harvard University depicting among others, W.E.B. Du Bois (1868-1963). The photo depicts a group of a few hundred students standing on the steps of the transept entrance to Memorial Hall at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA. One of the students in the group, W.E.B. Du Bois, a leader of the Niagara Movement and co-founder of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), sociologist, civil rights activist and author. The Wikipedia page dedicated to him is excellent. The albumen print is stamped "Pach Bros" (of NYC) in the lower left and "Cambridge, Mass" in the lower right. Du Bois and his classmates appear dapper by comparison with today's dress code.
We believe the photo to be a graduation class photo from 1895, the year Du Bois became the first African American to obtain a Ph.D. from Harvard. Already teaching at Wilberforce in 1895, this assumes he returned to Harvard for graduation and possibly to defend his dissertation. Alternately, it could be a group photo from 1892 while he was studying sociology at Harvard prior to leaving for studies at Friederich-Wilhelm Universtat in Berlin. The only other know copy is in the Special Collections at the University of Massachusetts Archives, Amherst, MA. and is attributed as taken in 1892. Their photo was either trimmed from the original eliminating the 'Pach Bros.' and 'Cambridge, Mass' labels or an unbacked print. It had been attributed to possibly reflecting DuBois' time in Berlin but has been updated based on our research. Our thanks to them for their assistance and dedication in preserving Du Bois' legacy. An initial analysis of Class of 1895 reunions shows many of the same individuals as this photo. Until we have time to investigate further at Harvard Libraries, it remains attributed to 1892-1895.
Du Bois' first bachelor's degree was awarded at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee and his second from Harvard University in 1890. He appears slightly older in this photo with a more receded hairline when compared to his individual photo for the Class of 1890 in Harvard Universities collections. There is also, to our knowledge, no photo of the 1890 graduating class surviving.
The photo is part of a collection of photos we purchased decades ago of Harvard University buildings and organizations and several remain to be listed. From their condition, we believe the photos were never displayed.
The albumen prints would have been ordered by class members, family, faculty and the university no differently than todays school photos. Some of the bear slight pencil numbering on the top right- probably the prints number to ensure they produced the requested amount. less
