Noa Noa (1991) is a vibrant color woodcut print on Suzuki paper by American artist Red Grooms. Created in collaboration with master engravers Bud Shark, Hiroki Morinoue, and Matthew Christie at Shark’s Ink, this piece is part of a limited edition of 40. Inspired by Paul Gauguin’s travels in Tahiti, the print captures the essence of island life with Grooms’ signature dynamic style. Measuring 51 x 76.3 cm, Noa Noa takes its name from the Tahitian phrase meaning “fragrant” or “simple and harmonious,” reflecting the spirit of the work.
Red Grooms and master printer Bud Shark began their long-standing print collaboration in 1981 with *Mountaintime*, followed in 1982 by their first three-dimensional lithograph, *Ruckus Taxi*. Together, they explored a diverse range of printmaking techniques, producing *flatsos*—flat-color lithographs such as *Elvis* and *Van Gogh with Sunflowers*—as well as three-dimensional lithographs like *London Bus*, *Little Italy*, and *Times Square*. Their innovations extended to interactive prints with moving parts, including *Red’s Roxy* and *Holy Hula*, along with intricate woodcuts such as *Noa Noa* and numerous monotypes, showcasing their creative synergy and technical mastery.
