Herb Cohen was born in 1931 in New York City, and first started working with clay at the age of 6. Since the late 1950’s, Cohen has been a respected potter with a long-time association with Charlotte, NC’s Mint Museum.
Herb earned two degrees, BFA and MFA in ceramics, at Alfred University before becoming a designer for Hyalyn Porcelain Company in Hickory, NC.
In 1958, after two years at Hyalyn, Herb moved to Charlotte, becoming involved with the Mint Museum. Cohen wore many hats while on the Mint staff, including exhibition designer, ceramics teacher and exhibits director. From 1968-1969, Cohen was the Mint Museum Acting Director.
In 1972, Cohen and husband, Jose Fumero, moved to Blowing Rock, NC, to pursue their art full—time, but stayed in touch with The Mint Museum.
During 38 years in Blowing Rock, Cohen made his living as a potter, and with Fumero, founded the Blowing Rock Art and History Museum. Cohen also served on the boards of the Southern Highland Craft Guild, Piedmont Craftsman and the American Craft Council.
After Cohen and Fumero returned to Charlotte in 2010, Cohen became active in the Delhom Service League and the Potters Market Invitational.
