Set of 2 framed chromolithograph caricature portraits published by the British society weekly magazine Vanity Fair (1868-1914). Vanity Fair showcased satirical caricatures of notable figures of the time, known as "Men of the Day", specifically Doctors and Scientists. See my other listing for a set of 6 "Men of the Day" Politicians, Diplomats and Lawyers.
The portraits are beautifully framed in black frames with aged gold accents and matted with gold and black accented hand-colored mats. Each frame measures 14.75" x 21.25". These are original antique chromolithographs taken from the pages of the magazine, dating from 1896 to 1907. They were framed sometime in the 1930s or 1940s. Note the 5-digit phone number of the framers on the back stickers, which attest to the age of the framing. The pieces have wired backs, making them ready to hang.
The sophisticated and satirical set would be perfect for a library or office. The sepia tones and neutral colors complement a variety of decors.
The set of 2 includes:
"Dr. Jim", a caricature portrait of Sir Leander Starr Jameson, a Scottish-born physician, adventurer, and administrator in South Africa. Published in Vanity Fair on April 9, 1896. Signed "spy" by the artist Leslie Matthew Ward.
"A Master of the knife.", a caricature portrait of Sir Alfred Downing Fripp, a British surgeon and Honorary Surgeon to His Majesty in the Medical Households of King Edward VII and King George V. Published in Vanity Fair on September 18, 1907, in the series Men of the Day, No. 1084. Signed "spy" by the artist Leslie Matthew Ward.
