An original antique engraving titled “The Idle 'Prentice at Play in the Church Yard, during Divine Service” presented in a timeless wooden frame. It is the third plate from William Hogarth’s renowned 1747 series, “Industry and Idleness.” This particular engraving, created by Thomas Cook in 1795 after Hogarth’s original work, vividly illustrates the consequences of idleness.
The scene takes place in a church graveyard, where Tom Idle, the wayward apprentice, is gambling with unsavory companions on a tombstone. Behind him, the parish beadle raises a stick, poised to discipline him for his misconduct.
Hogarth’s “Industry and Idleness” series consists of 12 engravings that contrast the fates of two apprentices—one hardworking and successful, the other lazy and destined for ruin. This striking plate captures a pivotal moment in the idle apprentice’s downfall.
