A highly-detailed, large, finely printed image in harmonious, muted colours, showing a fanciful mechanism of unknown purpose. Examples of this limited-edition print are held in the Tate collection.
Hard to photograph well and more impressive in real life, with a silvery sheen to many of the inks used. One of a suite of four prints, the complete set of which is available (see other listings).
Roger Nellens, ‘the dragon of Knokke’, was a self-taught Belgian artist interested in the crossroads and contrast between machines and nature.
He invited many important artists to create large-scale works in his garden in Knokke\. Nike de Saint-Phalle made a huge dragon sculpture/environment as a playground for Nellens’ son Xavier. Jean Tinguely helped with the construction and created small sculptures and furniture for the interior spaces, and in 1987 a visiting Keith Haring was so inspired that he stayed several weeks and, with Saint-Phalle’s permission, painted prolifically on the dragon’s indoor surfaces.
Please note: visualisations of works hung in interiors are simulated and may not precisely represent either how the work is framed or its scale. If a work is not described above as framed, then please assume that it is offered unframed (although suitable framing can always be arranged). This piece has an attribution mark,
